Here I’d like to introduce what’s a domain name. Yes. For a new web master, the first thing he needs to know is what’s a domain name and which domain name he needs to register.
A domain name is essentially an Internet address. Domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. The name itself, eg: name.com, is the point of reference that allows visitors to easily locate the site.
Some of the web masters cannot divide the domain name and web hosting. Here I’d like to introduce more details about the 2 things. Web hosting is one server which is userd for storing website files. The domain name is the internet address you can use it for browsing. They’re separated but also related. As usual, you need to sign up a domain name and web hosting service separately, since some of the web hosting companies cannot offer the domain name registration service. Now there’re several famous domain name registration service providers in the industry, such as Go Daddy, Network Solutions, Tucows..
What’s sub domain name? Here I’d like to display an example. Such as “FindMyHosts.com” is a domain name and “XYQ.FindMyHosts.com” will be a sub domain name. One domain name can have numerous sub domain names. But please aware not every web hosting can offer the feature, if you’d like to create unlimited sub domain names, I’d like to recommend you can sign up a dedicated server.
Some of the webmasters might mix up the domain name and DNS server. Please aware they’re completely 2 different things. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. One web hosting company should provide a couple of DNS servers to you once you sign up a new web hosting account with them. And you need to contact with your domain name registrar to change the DNS server pointing to the DNS server of the web hosting company. Please aware once you change the DNS server, it might take 24 to 72 hours for the DNS propagation.
